I know that a lot of people think that “God hates homosexuals“, because of what it says in the Bible, (Leviticus 18:22); “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination”.
But there are several other statements like this made in the Bible, (many also from Leviticus), which are far less cut and dried.
For example:
- In Leviticus, eating shellfish is also classed as an “abomination”, (Lev.11:10). So is wearing poly-cotton fabrics, (Lev.19:19). But are some abominations worse than others? Does God hate those who wear poly-cotton socks or eat shellfish to the same extent as homosexuals, or are there “degrees” of abomination?
- Leviticus states that I am allow to possess slaves, (both male and female), provided I bought them in a neighboring country, (Lev.25:44). Some claim this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you please clarify?
- Speaking of slavery, I am thinking of selling my daughter, (as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7). In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for a young Caucasian girl?
- Menstrual uncleanliness – I know that I should have no contact with any woman while she is on her period, (Leviticus 15:19-24), but how can I tell when that is? I have tried asking my female colleagues, but they all take offence!
- Defective eyesight – Leviticus states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defective eyes, a hunchback, or damaged testicles, (Lev.21:20). I switch my reading glasses for contacts whenever I attend church, but I’m concerned that God will still be angry? Is there any wiggle-room for bad eyesight in church here? Also, does a vasectomy count as “damaged testicles”?
- Most of my male friends get their hair cut, even around their temples, (which is expressly forbidden by Leviticus 19:27)! Should they be put to death for this?
- I have a problem with my neighbours too! When I burn a bull as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord, (Leviticus 1:9). But my neighbours all say the odour is not so pleasing to them. What should I do?
- Speaking of neighbours, one of mine insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states that he should be killed, however, am I obliged to kill him myself, or can I just get the police to execute him?
These are just a few of the ecumenical issues I have been struggling with. If only they were all as clear as the homosexuality question, (“God hates haircuts”, “God hates those who eat shellfish”, “God is okay with slavery”, for example), it would be much simpler for everyone!
